2022 World Cup Soccer Tracking Charts

The FIFA World Cup is coming this fall and it is a perfect opportunity for unique math activities. Math-Drills offered tracking charts in 2014 and 2018, and now you can access the improved 2022 versions! Following is a quick summary of the 2022 charts.

Group Stage Tracking Chart

The group stage starts with 32 teams in eight groups. Each team plays three games — one game with each of the other teams in their group. Using points and goals, two teams from each group are selected to move onto the knockout stage. The 2022 World Cup Group Stage Tracking Chart helps your students organize and summarize results from each game and decide which teams move on from each group. Unlike its predecessors, the 2022 tracking chart is fillable and savable enabling a paper-free experience if you so choose. Because there are so many teams in the group stage, the chart is two pages long plus an instruction page. There is no answer key (yet) because no games have been played! For full instructions on how to use the chart, please see the instructions page. Here is a preview of the chart and its columns.

Knockout Stage Tracking Chart

Sixteen teams move from the group stage to the knockout stage which changes to a single game elimination process. If a team loses a game, they are out (except to decide the third place winner); if a team wins a game, they move on. Because of this, the 2022 World Cup Knockout Stage Tracking Chart is less complex than the group stage tracking chart, but it will require a bit of thinking to get it started. The reason for this is that there is a very specific way to organize the teams on the chart. To assist with this, the chart includes letter and number combinations such as G2 which means the second place winner from group G gets placed in that spot. This chart is also fillable, savable and printable. One of the many improvements over the 2014 and 2018 versions is that this chart includes spaces to record final scores. The chart fits on one page, but there is also an instructions page and two pages of cut-out flags if students want to enhance the look of their charts! Here is a preview of a filled out chart using some teams that won’t be appearing in the 2022 World Cup.
